The HP PictureScan software automatically performs several actions needed to create a high-quality scanned picture.  These actions include finding the picture on the scanner glass, identifying whether the picture is a Photograph or Drawing, and setting the exposure (the lightness and darkness) correctly.  You may choose to turn off, or back on again, the automatic find feature.

  8. 1  Click the Options button.
  9. 2  Click the Border Settings icon.
  10. 3  Select Always detect pictures automatically.  If an X is in the box, it means the automatic find feature is active.  If blank, no selection borders will be drawn automatically, so unless you wish to scan the entire scanner glass, you must draw one yourself to indicate which part of the page or picture you wish to keep.
  11. 4  Click OK.
  12. 5  The change takes effect the next time you start HP PictureScan.   If you wish to use the new settings for your current picture, click Cancel on HP PictureScan's main screen and then start the scanning again.

  16. Automatic exposure of the selected area is determined based on its contents.  Adjust the selection border so it surrounds just the part of the picture that you want.  You cannot alter the automatic exposure.

Automatically finding pictures on the scanner glass requires time.  You may wish to turn off the feature and draw the selection border yourself.  However, if you do, the HP PictureScan software determines the picture type based on the contents of the entire scanner glass.  If the picture type cannot be accurately determined, it defaults to whatever picture type was selected during the last scan.  If the picture type is incorrect, set the proper picture type yourself.  For instructions, see How to Specify Your Type of Printer or Picture.

  20. If automatic find is turned off, the entire scanner glass is scanned during the final scan unless you draw a selection border yourself.
